Be Aware of IRS Phone Call Scams

I wanted to update you all on a scam going on as we speak. Apparently, there are some unscrupulous people, most likely from outside the United States, that are calling taxpayers in the United States. Most calls are coming to home telephone numbers with a message to call them back immediately for an outstanding tax debt. They go on to say if you do not satisfy it at once the US Marshall or sheriff will be at your door to arrest you. From what I have been told the telephone conversation and/or message is quite disturbing. This is a complete scam. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION AT ALL!

The Internal Revenue Service does not work that way. In the event of a deficiency, you will be notified by US mail with a letter directly from the United States Treasury. However, initial contacts from IRS agents are never by telephone. However, rest assured that this scam is ongoing. If you receive a call like this, do not panic. Call our office at once. . If you ever receive a deficiency notice from any Federal, State or Local agency, call our office at once and we will handle it.

The IRS (U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration – TIGTA) wants taxpayers to beware of IRS impersonators and report suspicious behavior. To learn more go to TIGTA.gov. If you believe you’re a victim of a scam, go to the website and click on the RED button to report the scam.
